Denbigh vs Challney Boys Cricket

June 18th 2019 was the date of the second win for Denbigh in this year’s cricket league.

Game No.1 against Icknield High School was unfortunately lost by 5 runs, with Denbigh winning the toss and choosing to field.

Game No.2 against Chalkhills was conceded by the home team, allowing Denbigh to gain the points of their first ever Year 7 win in 2019.

Game No.3 was against Challney Boys, and the two teams, determined to achieve success, played through the harsh weather. For the conditions in which they played, both teams performed well, with Denbigh winning the toss and choosing to bat first. The opening pair: Abdullah Sadiq (Captain) and Riaz Homyoon (Vice Captain) played until the final over, building a partnership, despite some poor calls and running between the wickets. Early on in the game, Abdullah was nearly caught, but luckily got it past the fielder. Riaz was nearly bowled by Challney’s captain; a leg spinner. Abdullah then went on to make 18, and Riaz made 11, until the second last ball of the innings, when Abdullah was caught by Challney’s captain. The number three batsman, Malaki Long, did not manage to face a ball, since the first innings had finished. After the first few overs of the batsmen knocking themselves in, they started to play some more attacking shots. Riaz hitting 2 fours when Denbigh needed them most, and Abdullah hitting 4 fours earlier on.

In the second innings, Denbigh opened with their captain bowling medium/slow due to the terrible and slippery conditions of the wicket. The first over was a maiden over. The next bowler was Wansh Kumar, and he bowled a maiden over along with Abdullah. The 3rd over was the over in which Challney lost their first wicket to Abdullah bowling their opening batsman out. Challney’s number 3 batsman was their Captain. Later on, Abdullah took 2 more wickets (LBW and bowled), Wanch took 1 (caught by Riaz), Muaaz Mahmood took 1 (bowled), and Riaz took 3 (all bowled).

Denbigh won by 33 runs and took 8 wickets. Both teams conceded too many wides, giving the opposition unnecessary runs. Overall, the two teams performed very well, and credit to them for playing in the unhelpful and unpleasant conditions.
